“To reach college students in the Greater Philadelphia area, over 20 pizzerias in close proximity to large college campuses swer supplied with Economist Branded pizza boxes. Each one re-inforces the ‘get a world view’ platform, with a pie chart that applies to pizza consumption.”
Marvellous.

As social media play increasingly large roles in fomenting unrest in countries like Egypt and Iran, the military wants systems to be able to detect and track the spread of ideas both quickly and on a broad scale. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is soliciting innovative proposals to help build what would be, at its most basic level, an Internet meme tracker.

David Streitfeld, New York Times article ‘Pentagon seeks a few good Social Networkers’ 02/08/2011

Lock up your internets people, the next meme may be a state-funded military coup…

We Are Social voted Most Respected UK Agency - well done London!
A quick note to acknowledge how incredibly proud we are to be voted the “Most Respected” agency alongside Wieden+Kennedy in The Reputation Online Top 100 Agencies guide, which lists the UK’s top 100 agencies with social media and digital PR competency.
We also came in 10th place on the overall ranking of agencies by UK digital PR/social media income – a testament to the hard work the whole team here at We Are Social have put in, and came just in time for our 3rd birthday.
Many thanks go to everyone who voted for us, Vikki Chowney and the Rep Online team, and respect also to our friends at W+K…

We Are Social’s Monday Mashup #79
1) FTSE 100 companies increase use of social media
The past six months has seen more and more of the big UK businesses using social media, as the chart above shows.

2) Facebook Ad cost-per-click increases by 22% quarter-on-quarter
An interesting tidbit of research: the cost-per-click of a Facebook social ad rose by 22% in Q2 of 2011, compared to Q1. If prices continue to rise at this rate, brands will presumably be forced into more effective community management and newsfeed optimisation, over simply snapping up social ads.
3) Brits addiction to social media
According to new research, Brits – and particularly Londoners – are addicted to social media, unable to avoid sites like Facebook when away on holiday: 49% of Brits update social networks while on holiday, a stat which rises to 53% of Londoners.
Perhaps it’s a direct by-product of many holidays beginning by checking-in.

We Are Social’s Monday Mashup #78

The News of the World and social media

The News of the World closed last week. Today’s Evening Standard has a good story (with some quotes from us) looking at the effect of brands pulling their advertising. For a more in depth look, we’ve covered the social media element of the story here.

Social media vital for revenue growth

Gartner’s latest report has one key takeaway point: by 2015, the 20% of enterprises employing social media beyond marketing will lead their industries in revenue growth. Boom.

Facebook’s link-up with Skype

The ‘something awesome’ which Mark Zuckerberg had hinted at turned out to be exactly what was rumoured – that Facebook has teamed up with Skype to introduce video chat directly within the browser. They’ve also created group chat on Facebook chat.

Google+ two weeks in

The big question for marketers is what are Google’s plans for brands within Google+. From all the information which has come from Google, it’s clear that brands are key to the project.

Welcome to the Age of the Customer
In a digital world, competition can come from anywhere. Customers have real-time information about pricing, product features and competitors; they hold all the advantages. And the key source of supply now is talent – and talent can get up and leave.
The only sustainable source of competitive advantage, the only defensible position, is to concentrate on knowledge of and engagement with customers.
Previous sources of dominance – manufacturing, distribution, even information mastery – are now just table stakes. This is the age of continuous disruption.
Your relationship with customers is the only thing that enable you to survive that disruption (think of the movie industry as it continually embraces new formats).
That’s why we are christening this “the Age of the Customer.”
